These past few weeks have been slow on both ends, resulting in a smaller update to show.

I've made a few upgrades to the background, adding a few more layers and details.

I've also worked on a platform for the character to jump to, trying to keep it coherent with the background.

Next up I'll be working on an obstacle for the main character to run into, an enemy, a helper character (we thought of it being something like a horse or a dragon that the main character can jump onto and grab a ride) and a portal (intended to change stages).

That's it for now, hopefully a bigger update will come next post, with new "friends" for our main character.

Hi there,

My name is Sílvia and I'm a second year Multimedia Arts student at Fine Arts Lisbon.

My group for this project is only one other person, Ana Correia, from IST. She'll take care of the programming aspect of the game, while I'm in charge of the visual aspect.

We've already talked through skype a couple of times, discussed the main ideas for the game, and I've already started working on some artwork for it - main character background and items such as coins and gems - which you can see on the left image.

We also have a separate blog for the project itself (in Portuguese) - https://portalexplorergame.wordpress.com/

This game will be for mobile platforms, 2D style. It will have different thematic stages, inspired in games such as "Banana Kong".

We'll be mainly focusing on a first stage, which is medieval themed, pixel-art inspired.

I'll keep updating both blogs as we go along with the project.

Since my last post I've had to re-work the main character in order for it to be animated.

I've been exploring Spriter to do the animations and export them into sprites to be able to give to Ana, so she can create the first prototype.

I've also started working on the obstacles - there will be logs, rocks (possibly rolling towards the player) and arrows on the ground - as well as the friendly ride - a horse. Those aren't final products yet, I'm yet to make some alterations on them.

The main focus was the animation of the character, as it was the most urgent at this point.

Updates since the last time:

I've re-designed the log, since I found it too busy for my liking. I've also created an arrow as an obstacle (I still need to create that rock).

Along with those obstacles I've started creating the portal, which will let the main character travel through different levels (although for this first stage of the game we're only focusing on the first level). It still needs some work out into I've been trying to fragment the horse as well in order to animate him as well, but that's still a bit too messy to show.

After finishing both the portal and the horse I'll focus on the rock, as it's the missing obstacle, and I may try to start creating an enemy. I'd also like to focus on the portal, even though it's not needed yet for gameplay, because I'd like to experiment with it for a possible logo.

These past few weeks we've been focusing on finishing the most important parts of the game in order to get it done and playable in time for MOJO.

I created an enemy, finalized the horse as well as that long awaited rock.

Then I created the logo for the game, keeping it within the pixel-art style and the color theme of the game.

Finally I had to create the posters to put up during our MOJO presentation. I created one main poster showcasing the game, where I included the background, keeping it small on the bottom, with a big logo in the center and the main character and enemy next to it, along with some of the items in the game. The other two posters showcase the two worlds in the game, featuring screenshots from both (on the medieval level they appear on top of in-game platforms), and using the same idea of the small background in the bottom.

The underwater level that was used is from free Unity assets, just in order to show the two-world switch and playability in MOJO, but I intend to continue helping Ana in order to launch the game in August. It will be available for iOS, Android and Windows 10.
