The Art's Quest

By now the characters of the Painting Level have been decided so I moved on to the coloring stage. I also did a little animated experiment on the run cycle of the main character. Then the same process needs to be done for the Music Level. All the scenarios need to be created as well and eventually more monsters will be invented. In addition, the group has decided that we should just focus on two levels, the Painting and the Music Level. The Performing Arts Level remains in “stand by”.

Hey, I am Gabriela Fial, a third year student of Fine Arts University of Lisbon and member of APPA Project (provisory group name) a group with Master’s students from IST, Daniel Gonçalves, Luís Silva and Miguel Francisco. The 2D platform game we are trying to develop is about a character who lives in a world of arts, where everyone is somehow talented except the protagonist. Due to his lack of talent, the main character embarks in a quest to reach to the Art’s Tower, where the secret of Art can be found, aiming to seek its own talent. The tower has 7 levels, each level for each kind of art and with its own style. For now, we will develop 3 levels, featuring music, painting and performing arts.
By now I’m responsible for the character and background concept art and then I can pass to the animation stage.

Since the last post I’ve been animating the main character of the Painting Level. At the moment, I have finished the running cycle and the jumping movement. I’m making the animations with the least possible number of frames, so I can guarantee I can finish all the animations with the basic motion. Eventually, if I have time I will add more frames to make a smoother
movement.

Hello, since the last post I’ve finished the main animations of the Painting Level characters, the major one and two enemies. I also made the starting menu and I am now working on the sprites that my partners will use to build the Painting scenarios.
Now I just need to make thesame process for the Music Level.

Since the last post, I developed the animations of the Music Level main character. However, my group ran out of time and were not able to finish the Music Level, therefore we ended up just with the Painting Level. I also made the background’s sprites, yet they didn’t like it and preferred to build their own scenarios. In the end there were many things that weren’t working well, since my group was not the most communicative one I couldn’t understand most of the time what was going on. However, I think the experience was worth it, and I strongly recommend it to the new students. Although the communication difficulties I felt it was a positive experience. I believe that when we find something difficult it’s because we are somehow learning and improving.
